The past year was one of the most active we've seen since 9/11, beginning with the attacks in Paris in support of al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula against the magazine Charlie Hebdo and ending with the San Bernardino shootings in December, 2015. In between, we've seen dozens of plots carried out by terrorists across the country with a broad range of ideological motives and targets. In New Jersey, we had five terror-related arrests in the past year, demonstrating that our state—and the surrounding region—remains a prime target for terrorism. We believe that an informed public is an important bulwark against the main goal of terrorists—to terrorize the population and force us to change our way of life.
This assessment is designed to give all of our customers, from the Governor to the public, an understanding of the terrorist threat to New Jersey throughout this year. As we proceed over the next 12 months, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness will build upon this assessment through briefings, written products and webinars to provide analysis which is relevant, timely, accurate and insightful.
