The Protected Critical Infrastructure Information (PCII) Program enhances the ability of private industry and government to share sensitive information about critical infrastructure with the assurance that it will be protected from unauthorized disclosure.
- PCII protects information shared between infrastructure owners and the governments with which they collaborate to identify vulnerabilities, mitigation strategies, and protective measures.
- Access to PCII is limited to government employees and contractors with homeland security responsibilities trained in the safeguarding and handling of PCII with a specific need to know.
- Collected information designated as PCII can only be use for purposes appropriate under the Critical Infrastructure Information Act of 2002 and may not be utilized for any regulatory action.
- PCII is protected from public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and similar state and local disclosure laws.
