Foreign Fighter Source Countries

Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011, tens of thousands of foreign fighters have traveled to Iraq and Syria to fight with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other extremist groups.

The US Intelligence Community estimates that up to 150 Americans have traveled or attempted to travel to Syria since 2011. During this time, more foreigners have traveled to join extremist groups in Iraq and Syria than in Afghanistan, Yemen, or Somalia.

We remain concerned that veteran fighters in Iraq and Syria could return home to radicalize others or conduct terrorist attacks.
